Yes, the Area Scouting course is a great gift for anyone who has the passion and desire to become a high-quality evaluator. Once the course begins, weeks cannot be transferred or gifted to another student.
Absolutely.
There are a number of differences in the courses. We’ll outline them here:
- This is not as time-intensive as the Film Evaluation course. The Area Scouting course is built to combine a deep dive behind the curtain, showing you what goes into the process with our monthly lessons with an experiential learning project that you have the month to work on at your pace. Where the Film Evaluation course was 10-20 hours per week, the Area Scouting course is 10-20 hours for the month.
- This course is based around bi-monthly live webinars with the instructors and guest speakers where you’ll be able to ask your questions and explore the results of your projects with real-time feedback.
- This course is not heavily based around studying college film. Those strategies are covered in our Film Evaluation course. We will work on applying those concepts to projecting college players, collecting/analyzing background and character information, and preparing you to go on the road and collect all the information necessary to help your team value a player in the market.
- Passionate fans who want to learn more about the game
- Individuals who have been evaluating players outside of the NFL
- Current and former coaches who are looking to transition into scouting
- Former players who want to stay engaged in the game
- Coaches and recruiters who want to better engage scouts
- Media personnel who want to enhance their ability to generate content
- Agents who want to be more prepared to better engage scouts
We have had members from each of these groups participate and thoroughly enjoy the process.
The Scouting Academy does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, disability, socioeconomic status, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, age, or marital status.
In order to register for the Area Scouting course, a student will have needed to have registered for the Film Evaluation course before.
To best maximize the program it is ideal that you can make the live webinars on the 1st and last Tuesday of the month. We will tape each session, so if you have other scheduling issues you can absolutely catch up and you can send in questions ahead of time to be answered as needed. We approximate between the live webinars and the experiential learning project, the course will take 10-20 hours per month with the majority of that time being open to your schedule and not set by us.
Yes, we have had students who got a professor at their school to sponsor an independent study, and we verify the hours spent and assignments completed, allowing the student to earn credit during one of our semesters.
We can provide the course syllabus and our instructors' CVs for your school to review.
The 6-month course is $750 USD.
Coaches, sports writers, or anyone else who is employed in a field that relates to football may have the ability to write off the Area Scouting course as an Unreimbursed Employee Expense as work-related education.
You can read more about Unreimbursed Employee Expenses from the IRS here. You will need to verify that your situation applies with your tax accountant.
We understand that unexpected events can occur that would impact your involvement in the program. That said, registration for the course is non-refundable. On a case-by-case basis, we can provide credits to participate in a future session of the course.
